Forever United

2015 ForeverUnited FB FINAL

D.C. United and the Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) are proud to announce their community partnership for the 2015 Major League Soccer (MLS) season – titled #ForeverUnited. WRTC is a member of Donate Life America, a non-profit alliance of organizations committed to increasing the number of individuals registered as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Professional soccer players are fierce competitors, especially members of D.C. United.  These players push themselves for the game—sometimes leading to injury—which is why these athletes depend on the gift of tissue donation to get back in the game. ACL repairs, Achilles tendon surgeries and other serious sports-related injuries often require donor grafts to restore the player’s health and movement.

The historic lore and tradition of the team’s name – United – serves as an inspiring word for those who have experienced first-hand, the healing power of saying “yes” to organ donation. Donor families and recipients are #ForeverUnited. Living donors and their recipients are #ForeverUnited. And transplant surgeons and their patients are #ForeverUnited.

Currently there are more than 124,000 people in this country waiting for a life-saving organ. More than 2,100 of them are right here in the D.C. metro area. By the time a regulation soccer game is over, 9 more people will have been added to the national waiting list.

Superstar Defender and 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year, Sean Franklin, a proud registered donor, is the face of this important public awareness campaign. When asked why he decided to say yes to organ donation, he summed it up with simplicity and grace –”Why wouldn’t you sign up? Why wouldn’t you want to help someone?”
