Dr. Carlos Fernandez-Bueno

Medical Director

Dr. Carlos Fernandez-Bueno has been the Medical Director of Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) since 1995. Born in Puerto Rico, Dr. Fernandez graduated Cum Laude from Inter American University in Hato Rey, and received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He has worked at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Ponce District Regional Hospital (Puerto Rico), Catholic University School of Medicine (Puerto Rico) and was a Fellow at the University of Colorado and the University of Pittsburgh. Certified by the American Board of Surgery as a Board Certified Medical Specialist, Dr. Fernandez has been a liver and renal transplant surgeon for over twenty years. In the 1980’s, he served in the United States Army as Chief of Organ Transplant Services and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Dr. Fernandez was honorably discharged in 1995 with the rank of Colonel. He has served, and serves on several committees including the Maryland Council for Organ Donation Awareness, WRTC’s Organ and Tissue Advisory Council and Liver Task Force Committee, Georgetown University Medical Center’s Pharmacy Committee, and is the President of the Washington Area Transplant Society.
