In August 2020, WRTC began an exciting multidisciplinary initiative focused on identifying opportunities to better meet the needs of donor families, increase the number of organs donated, and improve the overall donation process. The Potential Organ Donor (POD) Work Group is a collaboration among several departments including Clinical Services, Community Affairs, Hospital Services & Professional Education and Quality Systems.
WRTC staff who speak with families about the opportunity of organ and tissue donation gather data focused on the important steps in the pre-donation process. The data is then reviewed and analyzed in several bi-weekly forums, including case reviews with the Family Services Coordinators and a management review by the POD Work Group.
A year into the initiative, the POD Work Group has identified emerging trends and is using the information to develop and implement action plans focused on community education and awareness, while also working to increase the number of families who say “Yes” to donation on behalf of their loved one.
