WRTC Recovers Ovaries for NIH Infertility Study

WRTC is one of three organ procurement organizations (OPOs) partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for an important medical research study. This time, NIH is studying ovaries from deceased organ donors to better understand Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), a serious chronic condition with no cure that affects women under the age of 40. NIH will perform several tests on recovered ovaries to potentially reverse the effects of infertility caused by POI.

WRTC will work with our donor families to request special authorization to recover ovaries from female organ donors who are 40 years old and younger at the time of death.

In April, WRTC successfully recovered its first two ovaries for the project from a middle-aged female donor.
